RoadScope — Privacy Policy

Last updated: 11 December 2025

1. Introduction

RoadScope (referred to as “RoadScope”, “we”, “us”, or “our”) is a map-based web application provided by a sole trader based in Victoria, Australia.

We value your privacy and handle personal information in line with applicable laws and good practice.

As a small business, we may not always be legally required to comply with the Australian Privacy Act 1988 (Cth), but we voluntarily follow its principles to protect your data and privacy rights.

2. Personal Data We Collect

We collect only the minimum personal data needed to operate the service.

2.1 Google Account Information

When you sign in via Google Identity Services, we receive basic profile information from your Google account:

  • your name
  • your email address
  • your Google user ID

This information is used to:

  • identify your account within RoadScope
  • distinguish between free and paid access
  • show your profile (for example, your name or avatar) in the interface

We do not receive your Google password.

2.2 Payment Confirmation (Stripe)

If you choose to upgrade to the paid tier, payments are handled by Stripe.

We do not collect or store your credit card or full billing details.

Stripe may provide us with:

  • a transaction ID
  • confirmation that payment was successful
  • your email or name (for receipts and account matching)

We do not store your card number or full billing details on our servers and we do not maintain a separate user database for this information.

2.3 Usage Data (What We Do Not Collect)

We do not use analytics platforms (such as Google Analytics) or tracking cookies.

We do not collect:

  • your browsing behaviour across other sites
  • GPS location
  • driving history
  • any other personal identifiers beyond what is described in this Policy

The Service uses OpenStreetMap and Victorian Government open data to show maps and camera locations. These datasets contain no personal information about RoadScope users.

We do not collect sensitive categories of data such as your home address, phone number, or any information not listed in this Policy.

2.4 Additional Technical Information Handled by Third Parties

RoadScope itself does not collect or store additional personal information beyond what is described above.

However, when you use the Service, certain technical information is automatically collected and processed by third-party providers that help deliver our site, login, and payments. This may include:

  • IP address
  • browser type and version
  • device and operating system information
  • timestamps of requests
  • general location inferred from IP (approximate, used for security/fraud prevention)

This technical information is primarily processed by:

  • Google Identity Services, when you sign in
  • Stripe, when you open the payment page or complete a subscription
  • our hosting provider/CDN, when you load RoadScope pages

These items are not intentionally collected, stored or used by RoadScope beyond what appears in standard hosting or security logs. In particular, we:

  • do not use this technical data to build behavioural profiles of individual users
  • do not combine this technical data with your Google profile information
  • do not run separate analytics tools (such as Google Analytics, advertising pixels, or similar)

This technical data is handled under the privacy policies of Google, Stripe, and our hosting provider.

3. How and Where Your Data is Stored

RoadScope is a front-end-only application with no traditional server-side user database.

3.1 Local Storage

All of your RoadScope usage data (including your Google login token, basic profile, and any flags for premium access or terms acceptance) is stored in your own web browser’s localStorage.

  • We do not transmit or store this data on our own servers.
  • Your data remains on your device and under your control.

3.2 No Cloud User Database

  • We do not maintain a separate backend user database or profile store.
  • When you close your browser or clear your cache/site data, data linked to RoadScope is not retained by us.

3.3 Security

Because your data stays in your browser, its security largely depends on you:

  • keep your device secure
  • lock your device when not in use
  • avoid using RoadScope on untrusted/shared devices without clearing site data

We enforce HTTPS on our website to secure data in transit (for example, during Google sign-in and when loading the app), which reduces the risk of interception.

3.4 LocalStorage Behaviour

  • localStorage is browser- and device-specific; if you switch devices or browsers, your RoadScope data (e.g. premium flag, accepted-terms flag) will not carry across automatically
  • clearing cookies/site data or resetting your browser will remove RoadScope’s localStorage entries (see Section 8 for how to manage this)

4. Use of Personal Data

We use the limited personal data we collect only to provide and improve the RoadScope service.

4.1 Authentication

Your Google profile information (name, email) is used to:

  • authenticate you
  • recognise you between page loads
  • distinguish between free and paid access

It may also be used to personalise your experience (for example, by displaying your name).

4.2 Payment Processing (Stripe)

Stripe uses your payment details to process your transaction.

We use Stripe’s confirmation (for example, transaction status, plan purchased) to:

  • mark your session/account as having paid access
  • enable the corresponding premium features

We do not process card details ourselves.

4.3 Service Operation

We use data stored in localStorage (for example, “is this session paid?”, “has the user accepted the Terms?”) to:

  • show or hide features that require payment
  • avoid repeatedly showing the Terms notice

We do not perform profiling or automated decision-making beyond these simple checks.

4.4 Communication

We do not send newsletters or general marketing emails.

We may use your email address only to:

  • respond to messages you send us
  • contact you about critical account, security, or legal changes, if necessary

4.5 Compliance and Safety

If we are required by law to retain or disclose certain data (for example, under a lawful request from authorities), we will comply. Given our minimal data footprint, this is unlikely, but we include it here for completeness.

We do not sell, rent, or share your personal data with any third party for advertising or marketing. We only use your information to operate RoadScope, as described in this Policy.

5. Third-Party Services

RoadScope relies on a small number of third-party services. These providers may collect and process data under their own privacy policies.

5.1 Google Identity Services (Sign in with Google)

  • We use Google’s OAuth service so you can log in with your Google account.
  • When you do so, you are also subject to Google’s Terms of Service and Google’s Privacy Policy.
  • Google may collect information about the authentication process (IP address, device, security information) independently of RoadScope.
  • We only receive the basic profile data listed in Section 2.1 and we never see your Google password.

5.2 Stripe Payments

  • Payments for the paid tier are handled via Stripe Checkout.
  • When you proceed to payment, you interact directly with Stripe’s secure payment pages.
  • Stripe collects your card and billing details; we never see or store your full card number.
  • Stripe’s handling of your data is governed by Stripe’s Privacy Policy and applicable financial regulations.
  • Stripe may process payment data on servers outside Australia.
  • We receive from Stripe only what we need to know that a payment succeeded (for example, transaction ID, email, plan).

5.3 OpenStreetMap

  • We use map data and tiles from OpenStreetMap (OSM) to display the base map.
  • When your browser loads map tiles, it may contact an OSM server or tile provider, which can see your IP address and general usage (like any web request).
  • The OSM data is open-source and not personal to you, but OSM infrastructure and tile providers may have their own usage/privacy policies.

5.4 Victorian Government Data

  • We use publicly available datasets from the Victorian State Government (for example, approved mobile camera corridor lists) to generate visualisations.
  • These datasets contain no personal data about RoadScope users; they describe camera locations, not individuals.

Each third-party service has its own privacy and data handling practices. We encourage you to review Google’s and Stripe’s privacy policies in particular.

We do not use:

  • social media plug-ins
  • third-party advertising networks
  • analytics trackers (such as Google Analytics)

6. Data Disclosure and International Transfer

Because we do not maintain a server-side user database, we do not actively share your personal information with third parties other than as described in this Policy.

However, by using Google and Stripe through RoadScope, some of your data may be processed or stored overseas.

  • Google: Google LLC operates global infrastructure. Information associated with your Google login or sign-in may be processed on servers outside Australia (including in the United States and other countries).
  • Stripe: Stripe is a global payment provider. Payment and related personal information may be transferred internationally as part of processing your transaction.
  • Open Data and Maps: Requests for map tiles or open data (for example, from OSM or State of Victoria data portals) may be routed through servers outside Australia. These requests do not include your Google profile data but may contain IP and technical data as part of normal web requests.

By using RoadScope, you consent to these potential international transfers.

If, in the future, we begin storing or sending any personal data overseas ourselves, we will update this Policy and comply with any applicable requirements (including those in the Australian Privacy Principles on cross-border disclosure).

7. Open Data Sources and Attribution

We use open data to power RoadScope’s features. This does not involve your personal information but is important for transparency and licensing.

7.1 OpenStreetMap (OSM)

  • Map display and geospatial context are provided by OpenStreetMap data.
  • Data © OpenStreetMap contributors, licensed under the Open Data Commons Open Database License (ODbL).
  • We display the required attribution (“© OpenStreetMap contributors”) in the map interface.

7.2 Victorian Government Datasets

  • Camera corridor locations and related information come from State of Victoria open data publications (for example, “Cameras Save Lives” materials).
  • These datasets are typically licensed under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0).
  • We attribute the Victorian Government as the data source inside the application and in our legal notices.
  • Our use of these datasets is strictly to provide RoadScope’s functionality (visualising corridors on a map).

7.3 Non-Affiliation

RoadScope is not affiliated with or endorsed by:

  • the State of Victoria, VicRoads or Victoria Police
  • the OpenStreetMap Foundation or OSM contributors
  • Google, Stripe, or any of their affiliates

They remain independent data or service providers.

8. Your Rights and Control over Your Data

Even though our data collection is minimal, you have important rights and controls.

8.1 Access and Correction

  • You can ask what personal information we hold about you (typically: email correspondence and what Google profile data we see).
  • In practice, your profile stays with Google and in your browser; we do not store a separate copy.
  • If something is inaccurate (for example, you change your name in Google), it will be updated next time you sign in. You can also contact us with any concerns.

8.2 Data Deletion (Erasure)

Since RoadScope data is stored in your browser:

  • you can clear your browser’s site data/cache for the RoadScope domain, which will erase localStorage entries (tokens, flags, profile)
  • signing out in the app (if available) attempts to clear those values
  • you can revoke RoadScope’s access to your Google account via your Google account settings

Once you do these things, we effectively have no personal data of yours stored on our side. If you need help, contact us and we can guide you.

8.3 Withdrawal of Consent

Using RoadScope and logging in is taken as consent to the handling described in this Policy.

If you no longer want that, you can:

  • stop using RoadScope
  • clear your browser data
  • revoke Google access
  • cancel any subscription (see Terms & Conditions)

8.4 Complaints

If you have a privacy concern:

  • Contact us first (see Section 11).
  • We will investigate and respond within a reasonable timeframe.
  • If you are not satisfied and if the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) applies to us at that time, you may lodge a complaint with:
    • the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC), or
    • another relevant privacy or consumer body.

8.5 Anonymity / Pseudonymity

The Australian Privacy Principles encourage allowing anonymity where practical.

Because we rely on Google login, true anonymity is generally not practical. You may, however, use a Google account that does not contain your real name (if that complies with Google’s terms). We do not independently verify your real-world identity.

We choose to offer these rights and processes even if, as a small business, we may be exempt from some formal obligations.

9. Children’s Privacy

  • RoadScope is intended for users 18 years and older.
  • We do not knowingly collect personal data from children.
  • If you are under 18, you must not use RoadScope or submit personal information.
  • If a parent or guardian believes a child has used RoadScope via Google Sign-In, they can:
    • clear the browser data on that device, and
    • revoke RoadScope access in the child’s Google account settings, and/or
    • contact us for guidance.

10. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time, especially as:

  • we add or change features (for example, analytics, new payment flows, new contact forms)
  • laws or regulatory guidance change
  • third-party provider requirements change (for example, Google or Stripe update their platform rules)

When we make changes, we will:

  • update the “Last updated” date at the top; and
  • if changes are significant, display a notice in the interface or via other reasonable means.

We encourage you to review this Policy periodically. Continued use of RoadScope after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the revised Policy.

11. Contact Us

If you have any questions, concerns, or requests about this Privacy Policy or how we handle personal information, please contact:

Email: roadscope45@gmail.com

We will do our best to respond promptly and to resolve any privacy issues fairly and transparently.
